CAFETY has long been alarmed by multiple programs operated by Aspen Education Group (AEG), particularly those west of the Mississippi who that were either CEDU* derivatives (ie. Mt Bachelor Academy) or simply CEDU-like, utilizing the same psuedo-psychological brand of break down "therapy". Of general concern has also been Aspen's chosen niche, finding any and all reasons to justify the institutionalization and segregation of youth from their families and community.
On February 19, 2009, CAFETY co-sponsored a press briefing on Capitol Hill with the Alliance for the Safe, Therapeutic and Appropriate Use of Residential Treatment (ASTART). CAFETY's former President, Brian Lombrowski, featured below, shares his concerns with attendees of the Capitol Hill press briefing. Mother, Crystal Manganaro, whose son tragically died at another Aspen program called Lone Star Expeditions, is also seen on video below.
Unsurprisingly, attorney Kelly Clark, an attorney based out of Portland Oregon who succesfully litigated class action suits against the Catholic Church and Boy Scouts, has filed a lawsuit against Mt. Bachelor Academy and AEG ( the subsidiary of CRC Health Group, which is owned by Bain Capital) for emotional, sexual and physical abuse. The lawsuit initially starting out with 9 plaintiffs, but now totals 17 plaintiffs. Damages sought top $25 million in lawsuit against the school. Read more from KTVZ.COM here.
